Therapy, Training and
Clinical Supervision
About Jo
Thank you for taking the time to look at my profile.
I have over thirty years experience as a therapist and trainer. In addition, I have significant experience offering clinical supervision to a range of professionals, delivered, predominantly, in organisational contexts. These include - health settings including the NHS, local government, colleges & universities, private business and the third sector. I also have a background in teaching, with some focus on modules in counselling and interpersonal skills.
Originally I trained in counselling at Leeds University (Bretton Hall campus), this programme of study focused on humanistic theories, with some focus on the person centred approach drawing from, psychodynamic thinking.
Later, I specialised and became a classically trained Client Centred Psychotherapist, accredited by the American Psychological Association, run locally by the Person Centred Association Institute (GB).
I have always placed importance on my own continued personal and professional development and regularly attend relevant training.
I hold an MA in Community Psychology and have a specific interest in the concept of ‘safe space’ which formed part of a piece of detailed research, taken from a context of higher education.
I am a trustee for Brighton Therapy Centre, currently being the chair of the Clinical Governance Group.
I enjoy the outdoors, particularly walking and cycling in and around the costal and country areas of Sussex and my home county of Yorkshire.

My Approach
I’m a qualified counsellor, psychotherapist, trainer and supervisor. My chosen style of delivery is influenced by the person-centred approach, developed by Carl Rogers (1902-1987).
I have been working within the field of health and eduction with over thirty years of experience in the delivery of therapy. If you would like to approach me with a view to accessing either psychotherapy or supervision, please don’t hesitate to be in touch. I will provide you with an initial consultation, free of charge. We can then consider together if what I offer fits for you.
I will then offer transparency around my fees and the length of time we might work together.
What I Offer
Therapy
The development of a relationship, is central to the way I work. I will create for you a safe and collaborative space in order for you to explore whatever concerns or issues you have. At times, it isn’t clear why talking about a particular concern or issue can help. However, in my experience, it is simply that process that allows you to understand and work with, whatever difficulty or problem you are dealing with.
I have over thirty years experience. With significant roles in service development and senior management. I am qualified in clinical supervision, counselling and psychotherapy, working from a humanistic framework. I also teach counselling theory.
I offer an initial consultation, free of charge, this will usually take around 20/25 minutes. The intention with this is for you to decide if working with me is right for you. I will also guide you if I felt an alternative therapist and approach may be more facilitative.
My main training saw me classically trained in client centred theory, I do, however, have extensive knowledge of the main applied approaches in psychology and hold a masters degree in community psychology.
The feedback I receive is positive and, I am equally able to offer short term or, longer term contracts and, again, I will offer you guidance on this and, of course, listen to what you want.
I can work with you either in a physical space or, remotely via zoom.

Supervision
I have over thirty years experience of supporting professionals from different fields in health and education. Working with therapists, nurses, teachers, social workers and housing charities.
I currently provide clinical supervision in the field of safeguarding, community based health providers and, therapists and trainees.
For me the purpose of supervision be that one to one or group, is to offer colleagues with a space of reflection around their work. In addition, it may be that, consideration is required in the exploration of issues that may be interrupting or, offering some challenge in day to day life. Reflection can come from various directions.
In all cases, whatever you bring, I will attempt to bring this back into the focus of your role and how, this may be impacting. We may also explore strategies for you to take forward in order to offer you tools in the management of the presenting issue.
My role is to ensure that this space is safe enough for you to be able to speak in an open way. I will create an environment that fosters trust and respect. It is very much my intention that we will work collaboratively.
My own experience allows me to have a good and grounded understanding of a variety of work settings, sometimes, you will also help me to understand how that actually looks and what areas may require a greater level of scrutiny. I will listen and reflect upon what I take from this and, provide you with feedback to enable, at times, a greater level of exploration. You may then, take forward, some actions for yourself to undertake.
The regularity of supervision, in itself, can be helpful. Not only in regard to the development of our own unfolding relationship but also, to enable and allow you to know that this pause in activity can provide that all important reflection.
There are times when it is difficult to know what the focus might be. Whilst often, I may enquire as to what the ‘supervision question is for today’, it may not always be obvious what is to be explored. In this case, this is something we can grapple with together in a collaborative and supportive environment.
Training and consultancy
I have delivered training to a variety of organisations which includes, local government, the NHS, private businesses and, third sector organisations. I have a specific interest in interpersonal communication, counselling skills, loss and bereavement and, psycho-educational programmes that support individual and, group wellbeing.
I am equally comfortable delivering short programmes, day courses and have written modules to support psychological and emotional wellbeing. Previously I designed and developed a course that considered ‘work with difficult customers’ and, have presented on a range of topics that relate to the development of healthy communities and the development of effective communication.
